500 U.S. Cities
Pledge to Reduce Global Warming
“On May 15, 2007, Tulsa, Oklahoma became the 500th city to
endorse the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, a voluntary commitment by
U.S. cities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and global warming pollution in
their communities to 7 percent below 1990 levels by 2012.”
U.S. Mayors
Climate Protection Agreement
“When the U.S.
government refused to ratify the Kyoto Protocol, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels
rallied mayors from other cities across the United States to join him in a
nationwide effort to cut greenhouse gas emissions and reduce global warming by
adopting the Kyoto targets.”
U.S. Climate
Action Partnership: A Coalition for Change
“The United
States Climate Action Partnership (USCAP) is an unusual coalition of U.S.
industry and environmental leaders set on reducing global warming through
federal legislation and a market-driven approach that includes a mandatory cap
on greenhouse gas emissions.”
Rogers and
Me
“Meet Jim
Rogers, a great American paradox. Rogers is the CEO of Duke Energy, a huge power
company and a major polluter, but he is also one of the United States' leading
advocates for federal regulation of greenhouse-gas emissions. In this
wide-ranging interview with Amanda Griscom Little of Grist magazine, Rogers
Rogers talks about the professional, political, and personal factors that fuel
his concern about climate change.”
Major Global
Warming Conference in Montreal
“Get the
details of an international global warming conference held in Montreal, Quebec,
Canada in November 2005, which included an appeal by world leaders for the U.S.
to ratify the Kyoto Protocol.”
Record Increase
in U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions Sparks Global Controv
“U.S.
greenhouse gas emissions have set a new global record for the highest level of
emissions ever recorded by any country. When the EPA released these figures,
British scientists quickly condemned the increase, criticising the U.S. for
failing to lead international efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions and
reduce global warming.”
What's Being
Done About Global Warming?
“The Pew
Center on Global Climate Change reports on what is being done about global
warming internationally, at the federal and state levels in the United States,
and in the business community.”
Cutting Night
Flights Could Reduce Global Warming
“Reducing or
eliminating commercial airline flights at night, and especially in winter, could
help slow global warming by lowering greenhouse gas emissions caused by air
traffic, according to a study by meteorologists at the University of Reading in
southern England.”
World Leaders
Launch Initiative to Accelerate Work on Global Warming
“Lawmakers
from G8 nations and five major developing countries, plus officials from
financial and business organizations, are backing an initiative to monitor
global warming and force governments to act more decisively to control
it.”
U.S. Autos
Account for Half of Global Warming Linked to Cars
Worldwide
“U.S.
automobiles and light trucks are responsible for nearly half of all greenhouse
gases emitted by automobiles globally, according to a new study by Environmental
Defense.”
